The candle arch, or Schwibbogen, is thought to have begun in the mining communities of Germany's Ore Mountains, where the arched shape is often said to represent the mouth of a mine and the miners' longing for daylight through the long, dark winter. The oldest surviving metal candle arches date to the 18th century, and the tradition of placing a glowing arch in the window spread across northern Europe and Scandinavia, where it remains a much-loved symbol of warmth and welcome.
