Choosing the Right Outdoor Christmas Garland

Outdoor Christmas garlands are lengths of artificial evergreen foliage, usually pre-lit with LED lights, made to dress doorways, porches, railings, fences and banisters through the festive season.

The first choice is pre-lit or plain. A pre-lit garland arrives with LED lights already woven through the foliage, so it is ready to hang straight from the box and gives an even, tangle-free glow. A plain, undecorated garland gives you a blank canvas to add your own lights, baubles and ribbon for a bespoke look. Most shoppers choose pre-lit for its convenience and consistent finish.

Next, think about power. Mains power suits displays near an outdoor socket and gives constant brightness for larger runs. Battery-powered garlands can go anywhere, making them ideal for a front door or a fence with no socket nearby, and many include a built-in timer. Solar is best for the milder, brighter months when longer daylight hours keep the panel charged. Finally, measure the run and check the weatherproof rating. As a rough guide, a standard door surround takes around 2.7m to 3m of garland, while longer runs along fencing or a staircase may need several joined together. The IP rating tells you how well a garland copes with water: IP44 is splash-resistant and ideal for sheltered spots such as a covered porch, whereas IP65 is fully weatherproof and built for exposed positions, permanent installations and commercial displays.

Where to Use Your Outdoor Garland

Frame a front door, wind a garland along a porch handrail or stair banister, drape it over a gate or across fence panels, or trail it along a windowsill or the top of a garden wall. For a co-ordinated, welcoming entrance, pair your garland with a matching wreath on the door.

To hang it securely, plan and measure the run, work from a fixed point such as a door hinge or post, and fix the garland every 30cm to 40cm with weatherproof hooks, clips or cable ties so it holds its shape in the wind. Keep any battery box or transformer in a dry, sheltered spot, use an outdoor-rated extension lead for mains power, and switch on the built-in timer so your display lights up automatically each evening.
